Why does all this happen? The simple answer is diets just don't work! The problem with diets is they are based on restriction; they focus on good and bad foods. So, guess what, when we are told we can't have something, we tend to want it more. Diets simply don’t work with the reasons that we may overindulge or turn to food when we need that pick me up, or that comfort.
It can be so easy to feel like we will always be on a diet, after losing weight in the past and slowly putting it all, or more back on. According to research, 95% of people who diet and lose weight will regain all or more of the weight they lost within a year or two of stopping the diet. Some say that the failure rate is even higher, with one study suggesting that 55% of people always fail when they go on a diet.
If diets truly worked, then there wouldn't be so many out there. People wouldn't need to rejoin slimming world; they wouldn't be following one diet fad to the next.
As a society we can be fed unhelpful beliefs about food, be that 'if you don't eat all your dinner, you won’t have pudding'. Maybe that 'there are starving children in Africa, so you shouldn't waste your food'. We can associate food with love, celebrating with meals out, or being made special meals when we are feeling poorly. These beliefs can become deeply rooted. Sometimes we just need to go back to basics and work on healthy habits. After all food is fuel!
